People tend to see cemeteries as final resting places for their beloved relatives and the spirits of the deceased watch over us. In most cases, the deceased have already moved on. The living, however, can pull them back from beyond by their emotional attachements.
So, this is how the living can make a cemetery a haunted place.
How Cemeteries Become Ghostly Hotbeds
It’s acceptable for people to experience painful and negative emotions at cemeteries. You find people openly mourning their loved ones and wishing they could have them back. This energetic burst infuses the area with powerful emotions. When you combine that with intent, like a wish, you can bring a spirit back to our world.
In most cases, it’s newer cemeteries that are haunted. That’s because living family members still visit, express grief and charge the area. Older cemeteries, especially those over 200 years, tend to have lost their charge so spirits don’t return to the area. There are exceptions to the rules. In Great Britain, there are many old cemeteries, however, they’re still used by the community. I’m talking about abandoned cemeteries.
Here in the USA, most cemeteries are new and frequented often. There seems to be a sweet spot for haunted activity. It’s between 50 years and 150 years. That could be why the New World becomes a paranormal hot bed.
We have cities that have grown and put a living presence in the graveyard area. Day by day, the living walk by graveyards and project sympathy to those at rest. It’s another charge to power the cemetery.
In other cases, desecration, or the damaging of a graveyard by the living, brings spirits back to the cemetery. They seek to find those who have disturbed their rest like at Bachelor’s Grove Cemetery in suburban Chicago.
So, it’s the living who create a haunted cemetery. Most graveyards and cemeteries don’t start out as haunted. Ghosts and spirits usually haunt their favorite places when they were alive. It’s the powerful emotional energy that pulls them away.
