Introduction to Haunted Asylums

Introduction to Haunted Asylums

February 17, 2015 Jacob 'Jake' Rice

They were places of horrible conditions, neglected patients and death. Most insane asylums have shut down since the 1990s, but their ghostly legacy continues. As you can guess, our next topic is haunted asylums.

Haunted Asylum Topics

We’re not going to re-hash the history of each asylum. You can find that on Wikipedia. We’ll tell you about the resident ghosts, ghostly activities on the asylum grounds, and give you ghost hunting tips. Plus, we’ll add a bunch of creepy photos and videos taken from each property.

We’ll also hold our opinions about the controversies surrounding the cottage ghost tour industry at these places.

Haunted Asylum List

We’re going to cover the asylums listed below. Each will have its own post and we’ll dive into gory detail for each site. Unfortunately, most of them don’t have a singular, named ghost, but a group of roaming spirits active at night and during the day.

Here’s the list (we’ll add links once we publish the posts):

  • Pennhurst Asylum
  • Danvers State Hospital
  • Trenton State Hospital
  • Peoria State Hospital
  • Athens Lunatic Asylum

This isn’t an exhaustive list. If it were, we’d have listed Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, eh? We also excluded hospitals without a history as a mental health facility, like Waverly Hills Sanatorium.

Before we cover each asylum, we’ll tell you the commonalities of all the asylums, which you can apply to facilities in your area.

To help you find all the articles, we’ll categorize them under ‘Haunted Houses’ and tag them with ‘asylums.’

Hi gang. I was very excited to write about haunted asylums. When we sat down to pick them, we want to focus on asylums that don’t appear on every ghost hunting reality show, or had something very compelling in their pasts.

When thinking about the next haunted series, do you think we should write about haunted prisons, haunted bridges or haunted lighthouses? For me, prisons would be the easiest to get info on, but I’m more interested in haunted bridges. Let us know, eh?
