Ghostly Hitchhikers | Something Followed You Home
Not all ghostly hitchhikers are literal like Resurrection Mary. Sometimes, you bring something home with you … and things start to go bump in the night. Get the spectral scoop after the jump.
Understanding Ghostly Hitchhikers
Ghostly hitchhikers are spirits or entities that attach themselves to you, without you even knowing it. They follow you back home. Unlike a more traditional haunting, these ghosts can be mobile. Once they come back with you, ghostly activity rapidly starts.
How Ghosts or Spirits Attach To You
Energy Signatures
Spirits may be drawn to you because of your energy frequency. Your emotional state, psychic openness, or recent activities (like a ghost hunt) can make you more susceptible to attachments.
Environmental Factors
Visiting locations with a high likelihood of a ghostly presence, like cemeteries, battlefields, or tragedies, can increase your chances of an attachment. If you engage in activities like using Ouija boards or conducting séances have even higher odds of attachment.
Signs of a Ghostly Hitchhiker
Immediate Onset of Ghostly Activity
Experiencing unexplained phenomena, like objects moving, phantom footsteps, or sudden cold spots, within hours of returning from a haunted place.
Changes in Personal Energy
Feelings of fatigue, mood swings, or a sense of being watched might indicate a ghostly attachment.
Odd Behavior from Family and Pets
Family members or pets show odd behavior, like fearful or anxious behavior, within a day or two.
Ghostly Activities’ Experience: I’ve been followed home a few times over the years. The first time is after dinner at a restaurant that was a (former) bank in the 1930s. Once I got home, Wally, my dog starting barking up a storm at something behind me. I just told the ghost it had to go, or I’d sick Wally on it. It left pronto. And that’s how I handle ghostly hitchhikers. I tell them to skidaddle.
Preventive Measures
Grounding and Protection Techniques
Before going on a ghost hunt, you might want to ground yourself. That helps create a protective barrier so a ghost will think twice about latching on to you. The most popular way to do that is with the white-light bubble exercise. I’ve used it, and it seems to work just fine.
Use of Protective Tools
When I’m really worried about a haunt, I bring out my obsidian-onyx-tiger’s eye bracelet. I swear that thing throws up blast shields that would make the Star Trek Enterprise jealous. Really, a few crystals and stones can do a world of good for you.
Setting Boundaries
I like to set my intentions and boundaries up front at a haunt. It’s as simple as saying “No spirit can follow me home, nor can you touch me.” You’d be surprised at how well direct communication works!
Dealing with a Persistent Hitchhiker
Cleansing Rituals
Smudging with sage is the most common way to clear a spirit. You’ll have to do it every week for as many as 12 weeks to permanently remove the spirit. Some entities are just stubborn. They need extra cleansing to come undone.
Ghostly Activities’ Experience: I’ve written a few articles on paranormal protection. You can find that handy-dandy list right here.
Seeking Professional Help
Sometimes, you can’t figure out how to remove the hitchhiker. In other cases, they keep returning no matter how much you try. In that situation, it’s time to get a pro, someone with high-powered clearing skills. Sage and smudging doesn’t work in every haunted case.
Ethical Considerations
I think the big thing is to understand why a ghost, spirit or entity would want to attach themselves to you. Once you know that, then you can protect yourself, your family and friends, and stop it from happening again.
But you can’t be a dick about it. Ghosts were people in life, so a softer touch, rather than an iron fist, is the better way to remove the ghost.
