A Paranormal Field Guide

Ghost Hunting without Fancy Gadgets

Ghost Hunting without Fancy Gadgets

April 6, 2013 Jacob 'Jake' Rice

You don’t need a bunch of digital gadgets to collect ghostly activity. You just need a few things to capture it on your next ghost hunt. So, without further elaboration, let’s hunt like it’s 1983.

You don’t need a digital camera, IR camera, EMF meter, full-spectrum camera, digital recorder and digital thermometer. You need some basics, although a camera does come in handy.

Low-Tech Ghost Hunting Equipment Guide

Pen + Paper

You have to write down the evidence in your journal or log book. Note the date, time and weather conditions of the investigation. You also want to note the lunar phase and solar activity. If there are any debunkable noises and shadow, you have to jot it down. Otherwise, the entire data set could be discredited.

Compass

This captures variations in the magnetic field. If a ghost is nearby, it will cause the compass needle to move strangely. Remember to write this down.

Tape recorder

Some investigators say tape captures better quality EVP than a digital recorder. It’s harder to note the time on tape, so remember to bring your watch to mark events and debunkable sounds.

Chalk

Use the chalk and draw think lines on hardwood floors by a door. Make them thick. Spirits can leave imprints in chalk. Remember to keep other hunters and pets away from this area. They could contaminate your evidence.

Bells or Chimes

This is a popular test. Set out a bell or hang a set of chimes in a sealed off room. Ask the spirits to ring the bell or chimes. It works best for yes-or-no type questions. That’s one chime/ring or yes; two chimes/rings for no.

Film Camera

We prefer Polaroids, if you can still find one. There’s something about the quality of a polaroid pic that seems to capture the spirit. This is the preferred camera for a daytime investigation.

Always remember to document, document, document. If you uncover some ghostly activity, write down the when, where, what of the occurrence for a later visit. You may want to bring the hi-tech equipment at that time.
